Vail Public Library

The library is a 12,000 sq. ft., single story, sod roof building, connected to a 4,000 sq.ft., two-story wing of public meeting rooms, restrooms and offices. The galleria invites entry both from the north plaza and from the bike path on the south. The same brick pavers used in the plaza flow through the skylight-covered galleria. A deck enables out-of-doors reading in the summer. South and east facing windows and skylights provide sunlight and views to the creeks and slopes.

"Pam Hopkins and Craig Snowdon blended beauty and practicality very handsomely in this award-winning library. It was a pleasure to work with them on our mutual goal of offering an excellent library facility to the Vail community within the financial resources available. The goal was met, and the popularity and use of the library is greater than we ever imagined." Charlyn Canada, Library Director.

The earth-sheltered library conserves energy and preserves green space. The bermed north elevation defines the plaza with an undulating stone wall and insulates against the prevailing winter weather.

This library won the highest award possible for libraries - the biennial AIA/ALA national design award. It was the unanimous choice of both the architects and librarians on the jury.

"...the library is perfectly tailored and well located.". Martin Rabkin in his book, Public Libraries, Travel Treasures of the West.
