Flagstaff City/Coconino County Public Library

The library is an efficient one-floor 35,000 sq.ft. design. Nearly all of Flagstaff's historical buildings had been destroyed, so we used an unusual stone that was quarried locally and used in many historical buildings, malpais. This served as a reference to Flagstaff's building heritage. We created magical spaces and reduced the building's apparent size with a bay system - some extended out and others recessed.

"Thank you for designing a real Flagstaff building. Thank you for giving us back our history." Local historian and newspaper editor at dedication ceremony.

The roof is a combination of low- and high-pitched roofs. Rain and melting snow are drained through downspouts within the internal columns. Natural light was introduced with skylights along the ridge of the pitched roofs, providing energy-efficient lighting and introducing a delightful bright element.

Spanish and Pueblo and Navajo Indian styles were evoked by using glulam beams and triangular fan trusses, and four unusual fireplaces. The design of the window clusters was inspired by traditional Navajo rugs.

"Snowdon and Hopkins researched this community carefully. They took time to view Flagstaff's architectural heritage as well as understand its unique environmental and geographic requirements." Kathrine L. Chase, President, Library Board.

"In a community that harbors few good buildings, the new public library in Flagstaff, Arizona, sets a softspoken high standard... Because fragmentation minimizes the building's considerable bulk, the interior spaciousness is all the more surprising and wonderful... Structure and spaces seem light and airy... Snowdon & Hopkins satisfied pragmatic clients while synthesizng a Flagstaff architecture." Architecture, October 1988

"Pamela Hopkins and Craig Snowdon are both very concerned with not only the aesthetics of the building but also its ability to function effectively and efficiently throughout its use as a library" Ava S. Chartz, Director
